Christian Law Association – How will Obamacare affect your business or ministry?

Health Care: At What Cost?

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also known as “Obamacare,” has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court and will affect all Americans as it is implemented. The leadership of churches and ministries across the country need to understand how the provisions of PPACA will affect them.

Employer Requirements

PPACA requires employers who employ an average of 50 full-time employees during the previous year to provide health insurance coverage for all of its employees. Churches and other tax-exempt organizations are not exempt from this provision. A full-time employee is defined as an employee who works an average of 30 or more hours per week. Thus, any church, including any ministries which are not separately organized, employing 50 or more full-time employees must provide health insurance to all of its employees.

If an employer has 50 or more employees, then it has the option of providing coverage or paying a penalty. If the employer wants to avoid the penalty, then the employer must provide at least 60% of the premium cost of insurance coverage that is at least “minimum essential coverage” for employees.

Employers with fewer than 50 employees are not subject to PPACA and are NOT required to provide health insurance to its employees. However, should a small employer decide to provide health insurance to its employees, then it may receive a refundable tax credit for premiums provided on behalf of employees. Tax-exempt employers, such as churches, are able to receive a refundable credit of up to 25% of premiums paid for health insurance. However, the credit is limited to the total amount of income and Medicare taxes required to be withheld from employees and the employer’s share of Medicare taxes withheld for the year. For an employer to be eligible for the credit, the employer must:

(1) pay at least half of the cost of insurance premiums for its employees;

(2) have fewer than 25 equivalent employees (including the pastor(s) in the count); and

(3) average annual wages of less than $50,000 per employee (without counting the salary of any of its pastors).

Quote of the day . . . (Together we can make a difference))

“Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.”  ~ Vista M. Kelly

Take a minute to think about this quote and those of us who are out there fighting to make a difference in the world and stand on the principles the Republican Party was founded upon.  Together, like snowflakes, we can do it!

HB 76 & SB 76 to be introduced

property taxHouse Bill 76 and Senate Bill 76 are to be introduced regarding property taxes and education funding.  There are many pros and cons to such a bill.  We constituents we need to education ourselves on the issue and the bills.  Many times there are things “stuck in” a bill that really don’t belong there.  We have not read into depth in these two bills, but will in the near future.  Please education yourself!

National Federation of Republican Women
Calls on President to Reinstate White House Tours

Adopts Resolutions on Immigration Reform, Religious Freedom

ARLINGTON, Va. – Republican women leaders from across the nation unanimously adopted a resolution on March 9 urging President Barack Obama to immediately reopen the White House for public tours.

The group of women was gathered for the National Federation of Republican Women’s spring board meeting. More than 150 attended.

“President Obama clearly is not serious about solving our spending and budgetary problems,” NFRW President Rae Lynne Chornenky says. “The NFRW is appalled that he is denying schoolchildren and other Americans access to the ‘people’s house’ in an effort to score political points on the sequester. Fortunately, the public can see through this charade.”

Board meeting attendees also adopted resolutions supporting the Hobby Lobby court case on constitutional religious freedom, as well as immigration reform that includes a plan to secure the U.S. border, create a viable guest worker program, and provide a path to legal residency or citizenship for minors brought to this country illegally.

They participated in a number of other activities and heard from several speakers – including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, CNN political commentator Alex Castellanos, and conservative activist KCarl Smith – who discussed bold and innovative ideas for revitalizing the GOP in anticipation of the 2014 midterm elections.

Founded in 1938, the NFRW has thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories, making it one of the largest women’s political organizations in the country. The grassroots organization works to promote the principles and objectives of the Republican Party, elect Republican candidates, inform the public through political education and activity, and increase the effectiveness of women in the cause of good government.
