National Federation of Republican Women celebrate 75 years!

75th Anniversary Celebration
 2013

NFRW 75 bday cake2013 is a year of celebration, reflection and contemplation for the National Federation of Republican Women, as we celebrate 75 years of excellence in bringing together thousands of Republican women to work toward our common goals of promoting Republican principles, objectives, policies and candidates.

The NFRW kicked off the 75th anniversary celebration in early March during the NFRW Spring Board of Directors Meeting in Arlington, Va. Attendees enjoyed a festive cake (pictured right), as well as a special video featuring U.S. House and Senate GOP leaders and other GOP elected officials who wished the NFRW “Happy Birthday.”

The video was produced by NFRW 4th Vice President Lisa Roper and Kim Chambers, both of the Texas Federation of Republican Women. Watch the video on our home page.

The NFRW was founded in 1938 when Marion E. Martin called a meeting at the Palmer House in Chicago to organize hundreds of independent Republican women’s clubs across the country into a national organization. We will continue to celebrate our 75th year throughout 2013, with the grand finale planned in September at the 37th Biennial Convention in Louisville, Ky.

Registration for NFRW’s 37th Biennial Convention is now open!  Details can be found at www.nfrw.org.

NFRW members and guests will find that Louisville really is “possibility city.” It will be possible to enjoy a horse race at Churchill Downs during the opening night reception. There will be possibilities to learn – both at the leadership school, Message, Money and Motivation – Learning to Lead, and at the Saturday afternoon educational seminars.  You might even find it is possible to walk in the footsteps of President Lincoln during a tour along the Lincoln Heritage Trail organized by the Kentucky Federation of Republican Women. You won’t want to miss the possibility to hear from Kentucky’s two United States Senators, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Rand Paul. As they say in Louisville, the possibilities are endless and we look forward to seeing you there in September.

Assistance for Oklahoma Federation Members

 

Dear NFRW Members,

Progress was slow in reaching out to all our local Oklahoma RW Club members but we completed our contacts and have identified six members of the Helen Cole RW Club and two members of the Cleveland County RW Club that sustained loss of their homes and belongings from the Moore, Oklahoma tornado.

Those wishing to assist these federation members directly are requested to send GIFT CARDS for Visa, Walmart or Target stores or if preferred, make checks payable to the HELEN COLE Republican Women’s Club and mail to the local club president:

            All donations will be distributed to these identified members immediately to fill-in the lapse of time until insurance or disaster relief funds are made available. Our Local RW members are furnishing temporary housing, supplies, transportation and labor for recovering any personal items at the demolished home sites.

I also ask for your continued prayers in the coming weeks for the residents of Moore. While the news cycle will soon change, these women, their families, businesses and their community will continue to face challenges of daily living and rebuilding in the coming months and yes, even years.

Thanks to the National Federation members for your messages of comfort, prayers and actions that show what “caring for America” is all about.

Prayers needed for OK Republican Women and their families

A report for National Federation of Republican Women –

The Oklahoma Federation has three local clubs with members in the Moore area which was recently hit by severe tornadoes–Cleveland County RW, Helen Cole RW, and Liberty RW. Oklahoma Federation President Sue Thompson has spoken with each of the Club Presidents on the status of their members. Cleveland County RW identified one member who had lost her home. Helen Cole RW has several members who either lost their homes or had heavy damage. Liberty RW reported that all members are fine at this time. 

Our prayers are with the Oklahoma Federation members and all Oklahoma residents who have been so sadly affected by the storms

 

What You Need to Know About the Toomey-Manchin Bill

          This week the Senate debates the merits and demerits of the Toomey-Manchin bill, known as the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2013, which concerns background checks on guns sales. The following are talking points about the bill: 

 

  • The bill expressly states on page 2 that the it “supports and reaffirms the existing prohibition on a national firearms registry.”
  • Senator Toomey has argued that the bill only expands background checks on private sales between individuals at gun shows and over the internet, but according to section 122, a background check must be done on a transfer “pursuant to an advertisement, posting, display, or other listing on the Internet or in a publication by the transferor of his intent to transfer or the transferee of his intent to acquire, the firearm.
  • Subtitle A authorizes $100,000,000 in grants to be appropriated to enhance the National Criminal History Records Improvement Program from fiscal year 2014 through fiscal year 2017.
  • The bill contains a severability clause, which means that if any amendment or provision in the bill is declared invalid in court, the rest of the bill will be unaffected.
  • According to section 117, the privacy rights contained in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are waived, meaning that mental health records can be submitted to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System without having to abide by the privacy rights contained in HIPAA. The Gun Owners of America is particularly concerned about this measure, because they claim that under current law, 150,000 veterans have lost their right to own a gun on the basis of a psychiatrist’s diagnosis that they can’t handle their finances.
  • The bill expands the number of people who would have to fill out a 4473 form (a firearms transaction record) in order to transfer a firearm–this form has to be filled out when a firearm is purchased from a federal firearm license holder, like guns shops. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF) copies the 4473 information and keeps the information in its records, so by expanding the requirement to fill out 4473’s the BATF’s database of gun owner information will be expanded. Toomey and Manchin claim they ban centralization of information in their bill, but this provision would seem to negate that claim. Additionally, current law already bans registries, so the prohibition against a national registry in this bill is redundant. So while it would be against the law for the Department of Justice to establish a registry with the expanded 4473 information, that could only be enforced if the DoJ chooses to prosecute itself, according to the Gun Owners Association.
  • The bill needs at least 5 Republican senators to pass provided that all 55 senators who caucus with the Democrats vote in favor of the bill. The bill currently has the public support of Republican Senators Toomey, Kirk, Collins, McCain.
